I completed my MBA at Exeter University in 2001. This was quite a surprise on reflection, for at school I was a frustration to my teachers. My primary fascination was for motorcycles and rock music that all too easily distracted me from my academic studies! As I gained promotion in my job, I felt it essential to complement practical experience with a detailed understanding of management theory. I completed a Diploma in Management in 1997 and found to my amazement at the ripe old age of 37 that I actually enjoyed studying and being challenged with new ideas (my poor school teachers would have been even more amazed!). The MBA at Exeter was a natural progression management training. I deliberately chose the full time MBA to enjoy the university experience that I missed when I was younger, and had fantastic support from my wife Gaynor. The MBA marked a dramatic change in my life. I gained a new confidence in myself through meeting the challenging array of different management theory that characterises the MBA. As I neared the end of the programme, I believed that I was ready for a new direction. I felt that my best opportunity to make a significant contribution was through the world of management consultancy but I wanted this to be to my own model. In 2001 I took the plunge and formed Complementary Management Services Ltd and faced the daunting prospect of competing in the world of management consulting. The University of Exeter has been absolutely pivotal to my success. My initial contract came as a result of an Exeter Alumnus enquiry from BAE Systems looking for process management support for developing the next generation of aircraft carrier. The MBA at Exeter has changed my whole direction in life. I have recently been accepted at Exeter to undertake a PHD in the use of viable systems modelling to help understand the challenges of partnership working. This will directly complement my work at Sutton. Not everything has changed however, although I am now a committed academic, I do still own a motorcycle!

As a Diabetes Nurse I had reached the top of the nursing pay scale. It was during my next role as South West Regional P...rogramme Manager for the National Diabetes Support Team that I commenced an MBA at the University of Exeter, as I felt I lacked a recognisable qualification in management. After doing a great deal of research, I felt that the MBA was the best and most appropriate management programme available to me.I was fortunate to win a Golden Jubilee Scholarship towards my course fees. The part time course at that time was a three year programme, but I completed it in two by undertaking an additional module during my second year. Plus, I had the opportunity to undertake a new week long module - the e-roundtables. This brought together fellow MBA students from around the world and was a fantastic opportunity to learn about different cultures and consolidate some of my previous learning from the MBA. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and there were two particular modules which stood out for me - Strategic and Operations Management and Innovation Management. These provided the foundation for my dissertation which looked at the increasing demand for healthcare services in the States of Jersey. It proposed a redesign for healthcare delivery, with particular reference to diabetes, which could then be applied to other chronic diseases. The fact that I could do the course at Exeter, which was only a 45 minute drive from home, was fantastic and by taking the part time route meant I could undertake the course whilst continuing to work. The Exeter MBA has opened a huge number of doors for me - I even met my husband on the course!!It was during my second year that I was offered an excellent position with the States of Jersey as Head of Healthcare Strategy which meant a move to the Channel Islands, but a great opportunity to shape healthcare for a small island population. I believe one of the main success factors to attaining this role was the MBA.

Although I have a scientific background I recently moved into a business position and decided I should refresh my quali...fications. The MBA course is perfect because it provides an overview of business activities, a focus on decision-making and analysis, and a portfolio of managerial tools. It also provides the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with international students. Having decided to do an MBA, the University of Exeter was an obvious choice. It is AMBA accredited so I was confident the course would be of a high standard and internationally recognized. The course offered an attractive mix of core and elective modules that I could tailor to my own training needs. Crucially, Exeter offers the MBA as a part time option - students attend one day per week. I particularly enjoyed Organisational Behaviour and Accounting and Management Information Analysis. In addition to finding the modules interesting and informative I've been able to effectively apply my new skills straight away. The class bonded well and by sharing our own experiences in the lectures we were able to bring the subjects to life.Taking up a part-time MBA meant that I could continue my work as an Analyst at the Met Office throughout my three year study period. The Met Office greatly supports career development and is sponsoring me during my studies. As you get a fair amount of homework on the MBA course the support of your employer really helps.

I was one of those kids who did not enjoy school, attending as little as possible, subsequently underachieving in my ea...rly academic life. I saw my headmaster more than the teachers who should have taught me! Soon after completing GCSE's and 'A' levels, I flew to Florida to start a new life with Mickey and friends at the Walt Disney Company. Numerous times I had considered further education, with an MBA being top of the list. I chose Exeter because of its great reputation and it is my hometown. My lack of 'formal' education made me nervous, but receiving a high grade in my first paper kept me looking forward. How auspicious that marketing was for my first module.During the year, much time was spent exploring future opportunities. Doors opened that before I could only have dreamt of. In my final term I realised how much I enjoyed the MBA environment and how my new-found knowledge and self-belief had extended that feeling. Entrepreneurship studies was an option module. Building a business plan from a blank sheet allowed me to use skills and knowledge gained from the other modules. The outcome of that module is Fresha, which was launched in June 2003.During my MBA I learnt how the stock market 'random walks'. You could say that my professional career resembled such a walk prior to my MBA. The MBA helped me identify a market gap, write a business plan and take overall responsibility for strategic, corporate and operational elements, whilst identifying key risks with special attention given to budgets, financial forecasts and creating brand equity. The Management with Social Goals module allowed me to incorporate my social conscience making CSR a core part of the company operations. The MBA has taken me from having a proven track record in profit and sales to a clearer thinker, from strategy to implementation, a team builder and a visionary.

The Exeter MBA has broadened my knowledge allowing me to see each project in the context of the business. It brings wit...h it new ideas and best practices from other industries, many of which are applicable to the project based environments of construction. The Exeter MBA challenges business conventions and hones the skills that enable candidates to question the status quo, in order to find better, more innovative solutions to business challenges. My role as Contracts Manager is to ensure that projects are delivered on time, to budget, and to the absolute satisfaction of the client. Cowlin Group is a major building constructor operating throughout South Wales, the South and South West of England.
